What's Your Favorite Hymn?

Postby scrivener » Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:21 am

I used to dislike hymns, preferring the upbeat casualness of praise choruses, but in the last several years, I find a great comfort in the somber songs of our church history, including "How Great Thou Art," "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus," and "It Is Well With My Soul."

I'm sure "Amazing Grace" is in everyone's top five, but what are your other favorites?
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

In our hymnal, one can actually find "Morning Has Broken"! If anyone is, aherm, around my age, you can remember Cat Stevens (yeah the guy who converted to Islam) doing this song back in the 70s. I remember a couple springs ago, our church sang that hymn on a nice sunny morning with the birds chirping outside. It was "one of those moments". You know? When God's loving grace just smacks you in the heart! Anyway, I wish we could sing it again some sunny morn.

Man, I have always hated the way that song is sung in church. I love the Cat Stevens recording, though! It's all soft and gentle, the way that song should be.

It's a fabulous song... I just love it too... but agree that in most churches it's wrecked.

Aloha Mokihana! Wow, I was starting to think that nobody comes here anymore. Nobody except the spammers that is. Seems like ol' Satan is up to his old tricks trying to attack this place but I'm sure that an admin will purge the pilau stuff from this forum.

But back on topic. One of the harder hymns to sing is that classic by Martin Luther, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God". Whoa, we wen try to sing that yesterday and was hahd li' dat!

Oooo. I like that one too. Here are a few more:

"All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" (but what's a diadem?)
"Because He Lives"

and of course, "Amazing Grace".

Digging this one up, because it is appropriate...

Gimme a Gaither hymn anyday!

I do love Hawaiian hyms. In 2004, Nā Hīmeni ʻEkalesia was published, which updates "the red Hawaiian hymnal" along with a few Gaither tunes that have been translated! I ~love~ it.

Singing hymns are hard. I am an alto 1, and I am most happy singing in the key of F or G, whereas most hymns are sung in C, which requires that I a)break the rafters or b)sing in the basement. It's hard, I tell ya!
2 Corinthians 12:9 (King James Version)
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
